how does one compute the yeild stress in compression (shaft design) for 1018, 1030, 1045, 4130, 5150, and 6150?

If uniform compression is applied to an object, then yield stress in compression can be computed much like tensile yield stress: either an offset method or identifying upper or lower points during discontinuous yielding. For shafts, you may be interested in yield due to bending or contact stresses. For these cases, you must use other methods. Can you clarify your geometry and loading?
