Hi,

Been looking on this this site for ages, amazing source of information.

I have a problem with a current project I'm working on.

I want to put a sketch on to a bend but not exclusively, the sketch continues on to the flat surfaces either side of the bend. I have tried sheet metal component then sketch bend and the wrap tool but neither work.

I suspect that sheet metal is the way to go as I can't think of any other tools that would do the job.

Is this a part model or an assembly model? If it is a true sheet metal, you can unfold, pierce the hole and fold again. Otherwise, you wrap-cut it the way you want. I did not see difficulties having this done.

Hi,

If I pierce all the way through it says sheet metal cannot support disjointed bodies.
If I cut .5mm in it comes up with the error message "This bend has a cut that creates a beveled edge, which cannot be handled.

The wrap tool seems to be only able to deal with one surface. so when it is flat, radius, flat it can only deal with the radius.

Just been looking through the extra commands, maybe thickened cut may work.

Thickened cut comes to the issue of making the patterned surface in the first place.

If necessary just the one. I'm working on a test part that has one body.
 
The image is confusing. It appears to show two bodies.

Are you wanting to bend the flat part/body with the filigree, or add the filigree to the formed part/body

I agree with CorBlimeyLimey. It is confusing. There is no such a part in real world. If you handle it with an assembly, it should be a piece of cake.

This is a better image.

I want to have the filigree bent over the surface but it doesn't matter if it's added before , after or during the bending. Basically any way I can get the filigree pattern on a a bend is good.

Sorry forgot to mention that the picture above is of a sheet metal component unfolded. It doesn't fold.
 
Try to replicate the processes used in real life. If the filigree is cut into a flat sheet and then bent, create the model that way.

Or as rgrayclamps suggested above, you could create an Unfold feature (not flatten), add the filigree, and then a Fold feature.

With the sheet metal method I used the unfold feature then tried to use the fold but came up with the error "this part contains features that cannot be unbent"

I agree about creating as in real life but I can't figure out how to bend the flat sheet with the filigree on it.

Starting to think I'm being dense about this it but really can't get my head around it
 
Use the Sketch Bend function to add a bend to a flat sheet.

Can you post the flat sheet with the filigree for testing?

I think I've come at this from every angle, I've tried to sketch bend but it doesn't allow that.

The attached part is the test piece I'm working on.

It is doable. Try the following:

1) Start with a flat blank (sheet metal);

2) Add necessary sketch bends and bend it to shape;

3) Unfold the sheet metal part into a flat blank;

4) Add cuts as needed;

5) Fold all the bends into the final shape you want.

The part you attached cannot be handled with the Sheet Metal tools because the filigree is not cut through the full thickness of material. SW does not recognise parts with varying material thickness as sheet metal parts.

You will need to adjust the filigree pattern to allow a full cut-through, if you want to be able to use the SM functions.
 
Should have also mentioned that SW09 and earlier do not recognise multi-body sheet metal parts (17 of them) ... which your filigree creates when cut through a sheet.

SW2010 SM parts apparently can use multi-bodies.
 
Ah yes I see, I can bend one body at a time.

Bit long winded but if I create multiple parts of the same body and bend a different body each time that should work I think.
