Good Morning:

We have a 34 "pipeline in a mine - tailings water, we have approved our WPS under ASME IX, but the management wants the welding joints to be evaluated under API 1104, is this possible ???

Thanks for yours answer

Juan

For your pipe there is probably no requirement not to do so; however, if the pipe system was designed to B31.3, Section IX should be used.

If there is a jurisdictional requirement to use B31.3, ASME IX must be used. This would not preclude the Owner/Purchaser to additionally require qualification to API 1104. So I must ask, what are the design requirements?

Juan,
As weldstan has requested - what is the design code ?
If it is B31.3 you cannot use API 1104 acceptance criteria.
If it is API 1104 you cannot use your ASME IX WPS.

It must be welded and tested in accordance with the design code - you cannot design to a specific code and then choose another code to test it with, with a less stringent acceptance criteria.
Cheers,
Shane

It is assumed that you mean the radiographic quality of the production welds be to API 1104 and the welding procedure used is qualified to ASME IX. Without a design code referenced, this is permitted. It is noted that ASME B31.8 permits welding procedures qualified to either ASME IX or API 1104 but requires radiographic acceptance of production welds to API 1104.
