Hello guys,

I'm in a situation where, for a splice length, we can't use the full development length of the rebar.

Does the following attached detail work in such situation?

IMHO, conceptually it works great, but I don't see it covered in ACI 318 so maybe I'm missing something.

What are your thoughts?

I'm not sure it's street legal but I've done it myself with Ldh on 180 hooks with a transverse bar in the bend.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Another road to go down that would be street legal is a strut and tie analysis. If you can prove that it works by strut an tie, then it probably works. The attached article shows an example for a different situation.

As KootK notes, can you use a 180 hook? or can you weld if distance is short?

I'm not very keen of welded splices, it's just something rarely specified.

A 180 hook would also work. A strut and tie model seems the way to justify it.

I still wonder why this is not covered somewhere prescriptively, it doesn't seem like a extremely rare situation.

It's come up in exactly one case for me: delay strips with whiny contractors.
