A local bldg inspector quoting a bldg code requires 2" clearance between logs of exterior wall (log cabin construction) and a brick fireplace. There is no mention of a liner (w/ or w/o) in the text of the specific code.
I know that the ignition temperature of timber can be significantly lowered when exposed to heat for extended periods of time. However, since the 3 5/8" thick brick units are not efficient in transmitting heat, and the clay liner is the actual heat source. Is the 2" clearance really req'd?
