What is the best way to estimate the shear strength of a peticular wood truss? I have been able to backwork span tables to find moment strength, but is there some sort of rule of thumb for max shear?

Do you mean wood JOIST or wood TRUSS? The shear stress in a wood joist is 1.5 times the shear divided by the cross sectional area. The shear capacity of a wood truss is controlled by the axial capacity of the web member nearest the support.
