Will it be a series issue if i choose max principal theory instead of vonmises theory.

I am analysing a sheet metal supporting bracket for dynamic analysis in frequency domain.
Will it be a series issue , if i choose max principal theory instead of vonmises theory to judge the stress limit of the component,

The sheet metal component is ductile type.

not really, but it depends ...

in a s/m brkt you won't have out-of-plane stresses, so vM will be based on the two in-plane principal stresses.

vM will be higher than max principal if you have tension-compression, and lower if you have tension-tension.

and probably both are very conservative when it comes to considering the ductility of the brkt.

and is the critical mode of failure crippling or compression ?
