Wide Flange To HSS Col FR Connection

I have a HSS8x8x1/2 Tube Col and W14x30 beams on both sides that form a rigid frame. The design engineer used bolted end plates, but didn't see that the plates protrude outside of the walls. The steel fabricator has contacted me requesting that I come up with a better solution for the FR Connection.

I came across a detail that uses angle straps to transfer the flange force from one beam to the other. Has anyone seen this used before? If so, where could I find literature about it?

Verify the loads and load cases before substituting one connection for another.
 
I looked in both the AISC 13th Edition and HSS Connection Manual. I looked at the problem backwards and determined what the connection capacity was of the end plate configuration and then applied those loads to a more cost efficient connection. We have requested from the EOR the maximum loads.
 
I am a little confused with your question. If the column is 8" thick, and the W 14x30 is 6.73" thick, I dont understand how the plate is sticking out the wall? How thick is the wall? Is it W14x30 supported by HSS on both sides? Sorry, a little confused with the wordings.
 
What the original drawings had was HSS8x8x1/2 columns and W14x22/W14x30 beams. The connection between the Column and the Beam were bolted end plates. The end plates protruded 3" past the face of the HSS8x8 column on each side. The face of brick is 10" from the centerline of the column. Therefore, 10" - 4"(half of column width)-3"(edge of plate) equals 3". The distance from the edge of end plate to the face of brick is 3". The problem is that you cannot protrude into the brick line because moisture/water could get into the wall and cause problems.

We are proceeding to use flange plates top and bottom and welding them to the face of the HSS column with a CJP weld. The reason for flange plates is that the flanges of the W14x22/W14x30 are not wide enough to prevent local yielding of the HSS wall.
