Why is web based programming a better option?

I am wanting to see a power system with the status of all the various breakers (SCADA) and build the single line screens that we can see on the Internet. I've been told that Allen Bradley RS View, which is what is used here at the plant for most of the PLC programming is very limited for this application. It's 32 bit and old technology. And that it would be better to upgrade to an web based software package like Allen Bradley RS SE.

Is this true? Why is this so? We are basically looking at switch positions and some metering point data.

It is not a better option, just an option.
