Why does this function solve my overlap problem [COMSOL] 1

I had this structure made by someone else with lot of overlaps in the geometry, which caused issues for the mesh creation. This was solved by using a Form Composite Domains on the entire geometry. But how exactly did it help, did the overlaps simply get erased by the "Form Composite Domains" function?

When this option is used, Comsol ignores faces between adjacent domains (volumes) and combines them into a single domain for meshing and analysis setup.
