Which ASCE 7 to use

I had a posting about overhead door frame design few days ago. So some will know me from there. The problem is we are cutting an opening for an overhead dpoor in a metal building.
For designing loads for this frame which code needs to be used ASCE7-05 or ASCE7-10?

Is this considered an existing structure modification? Can we use ASCE7-05 that the building was designed for?

What does the person who is sealing the documents say? Have you asked them? Just wondering as i may recall you stating you being new to the field (?)

EngineeringEric (Structural0, the job is not required to be sealed. And yes I donot have much exxperience with repair and modification sort of jobs.

TLHS (Structural, the local building code is adapted the IBC. I donot understand well from this code what I am supposed to use, wish the code language was direct and clear for me.

If you look at the front of the code IBC, or the adopted version of the code. it has a 'references'. In there look up ASCE

The hardest part of the code is finding what you are looking for. That's why i refuse to use codes !

Find out what jurisdiction/city you are in.
From their website or by calling their local building department find out what the current adopted code is.
If it is the IBC, then in Chapter 35 of the IBC there are references listed there.
In the references look for ASCE.

Then under ASCE find ASCE 7 and it should give you the applicable ASCE 7 to use.

Typically for IBC 2006 and 2009 you would use ASCE 7-05.
For IBC 2012 and the forthcoming 2015 you would use ASCE 7-10.

Now all of these codes are MINIMUM standards so if you are in an ASCE 7-05 area you could still conceivably use the 7-10 but technically you have to always at least meet the provisions of 7-05.
