What to do with the toolbox while installing?

With 2006 now available, I feel that it is time to ask about something that has been lurking in the back of my mind for some time now. From reading the forums, I have gotten the impression that the thing to do when upgrading to a new release is wipe out the old version and do a clean install of the new release. (After testing and backing up the appropriate files.)

However, I am not sure what the best thing to do with the toolbox is. We have multiple users accessing a shared toolbox on the server. What I have done in the past was point the installer to the shared directory and let it do what it wants.

This seems to contradict the fresh install concept. I would try clearing out the share and letting the installer work with an empty directory; however my understanding is that when a specific fastener is used for the first time, it is instantiated in the toolbox part file. I suspect that it will break the assemblies that reference these fasteners if I try a fresh install of the toolbox.

So after all of that, my question is what is the best thing to do with the toolbox when upgrading?

Thanks,

Eric

Do not delete the toolbox that is out on the network. If you delete the toolbox all the assemblies referencing it will blow up. When upgrading to 2006 it will update your toolbox to a newer version but also keeping your current toolbox in tact. If you have already upgraded to 2006 and did not point the shared directory location to your network location(the location where the toolbox resides)Then there is a utility found on your local install directory that can be used to convert your network toolbox to a usable version for 2006.

If you need further help on this let me know. I have been around this block a couple times now.

YOu can change the location of where SW looks for you Toolbox in the toolbox.ini file which is located at C:\Program Files\SolidWorks\Toolbox

Eric,

Scott is right that you need to change the ini file to point to your network location. But also you need to update the database file because you will get an error message saying that the database is unexpected version.
