what is the splice point and the splice height ?

am a new instructor in the field of computerized structural analysis and design including the ETABS prog. i have lots of questions in mind, among the: what is the splice point and height and whats the benefits of them?? and can u inform me with the meaning of the diaphragm and whats the difference if it was rigid or semi-rigid?? and thank you
