Just like capacitor banks are to provide reactive power to the grid to fix the power factor, what excatly is the purpose of reactor?

Applications include, but are not limited to:

Current limiting reactors and neutral grounding reactors to limit the fault current

Shunt reactors to compensate for line capacitances

Filter reactor are used in filters systems to filter our harmonics

In-rush reactors are used in capacitor banks to limit the in-rush current

Smoothing reactors are used in DC systems to smooth the DC wave form



 
They can also be used as a tuned circuit for blocking radio frequieces.
 
or for balancing impedance of parallel lines that have different impedances (ie possibly run different routes).
