Is this an old term?

I think I've answered my own question. :)

Is it another word for pier? Is this term still used? First time I've ever seen it.

Bents can be the supports for bridge spans. Refer to the Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges published by AASHTO. They can be concrete, steel or timber.

I've heard it also referring to the supports of bridge spans... an elevated highway viaduct to be specific.

A "bent" is part of the symbol for Tau Beta Pi, Engineering Honor Society, as it is a historic, classic structure. The society magazine is "The Bent".

Thanks, CarlB (you get a star from Iowa Alpha grad 1975!)
