Welding anchor rod to anchor rod

I'm planning to extend some existing anchor bolts by welding additional rod to the top of bolt. I'm thinking of plug welding a sleeve to the top of the anchor bolt, and having the top of the sleeve threaded to thread in the new rod. I'm wondering if this seems reasonable or not, or if others have done something similat.

Threads are corroded to the point of being useless at this point... I'm wondering what a CJP weld to 1 1/2" AB would look like? Bevel to a pencil shape and weld?

Thanks desertfox - bolts are F1554 grade 36 equivalent, we will be inspecting chemical composition as well. I'm operating under the assumption they are weldable as the design drawings (1965) show the anchors welded to some plate.

The CJP would work as you described and I would ensure surface NDT of the weld region using either liquid penetrant or wet fluorescent MT.

A word of caution if I might, my company installed some new/modified steel rolling equipment recently and the client wanted us to use the existing foundation bolts where possible however the original foundation bolts were installed in the 1950/1960's and we refused this request because we could not foresee what the condition the anchor bolts or the existing concrete was in. We ended up drilling new anchor bolt holes and grinding flush the existing ones.
