There are many cods/Standards for welder performance and procedure qualification.

AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding)
ASME Sec IX
API 1104
Mil Std 248 (Military)
N/S 250-1500 (MIlitary)

And Many others. The actual test will vary depending upon the welding to be performed. Welding Process, Thickness, Diameter for Pipe, backing, Filler metal, backing/shielding gas and many others are typical variables that govern what range a test will qualify a welder for.

The American welding society (AWS) has a standard specification for qualification of welders. See Here

I work for a German steel construction company. I Think we have in Gemany another System for our welding procedure tests compared to the UK. Our WPS do not have to be approved by a special test sample, if the welded steel is not sensitiv in the heat affected zones...in UK you have to do the tests in any case. My question is, if the test- standards acc. to EN 388-3 are completly the same, or is there the possibility to make the tests more easy or have a bigger range of validity for the WPAR, which are the approved institutions for the WPAR in UK?
Thanks for any information
