Can anyone tell me what happens to the tensile strength of 3CR12 parent material in the immediate area of a weld.
Does it become normalised. If so, how does this effect the yield stress (normally 320 N/mm^2 min.)

The steel forms martensite in the heat affected zone. This essentially gives a higher strength to the heat affected zone. Tensile tests in air done on the steel welded with the recommended 309L filler metal normally leads to failure in the parent metal.
