An outer clutch ring of a winder, fabricated from BS 3100 Grade A2 cast steel, has developed a through crack extending from a hand-hole. Possible repair options include welding (full penetration weld possible) or alternatively cold repair using metalock techniques. I am concerned of metalocking performance under torsional conditions as the crack is characteristic of torsion (progression at 45 degrees) Does anyone have experience of metalocking such a component and could anyone assist with information of life estimates of metalocking compared to weld repair. How will one class a metalock repair in terms of BS 7608: Fatigue design and assessment of steel structures?
