Gentlemen - 1.API-510 Repair -In performing a weld overlay to internal surface of a corroded carbon steel vessel that had 100% full radiography performed at original construction, what NDE is required per API-510 of the weld overlay area? 2. same question for an NBIC Repair

Thank you

Liquid Penetrant. Or is the repair overlay on a longitudinal or circ. seam?

Thanks wekdstan - good catch on the weld overlay on top of wasted welds seams.

Weld overlay restoration of degraded shell areas will include weld buildup of areas that include wasted longitudinal and circumferential welds. Vessel was constructed with 100% Radiography (E = 1.00). I assume that only weld buildup areas covering longitudinal and circumferential welds will need to have 100% radiography performed - and that the other areas of shell plate material receiving restoration by weld buildup need only have liquid penetrant (PT) or magnetic particle (MT) examination.

please confirm.

Thanks

Paul

Your corrosion resistant weld overlay is ferromagnetic??

The weld overlay is a weld buildup of carbon steel weld for purposes of restoring required vessel wall thickness to nominal value and to satisfy code minimum required thickness for pressure. There is no corrosion resistance required as following shell thickness restoration a corrosion resistant coating will be applied.

This is weld build up overlay - not corrosion resistant overlay. If the overlay includes the original seams that required radiography under the original Code, then you will need to radiograph (or alternates NDE) the repaired seam per 8.1.8.3. NDE is required per the Repair plan per 8.1.8.2; it is up to the Owner based on service and alloy.

100% RT of the affected existing seams. Follow up with a visual and MPI wet fluorescent.
