I would appreciate some advise on the following;
UK installation, low pressure diesel oil distribution line, mild steel.
What is the usual method of Xray inspection. Is xray inspection portable, so that insitue welds can be checked?
What % of welds are normally tested?
If you can point me in the direction of the relavant codes , BS or even general information.

Thanks

MacOcean;
Questions;
1. What is the nominal OD and wall thickness of the line?

2. Is this a new installation or repair to an existing line?

3. What is the pressure in the line?

As far as relevant codes or standards, the one that comes to mind is the ASME B31.3 Piping Code. This code would provide guidance regarding nondestructive testing requirements for butt welds in process piping applications.

I have not dealt with any British Standards in terms of piping systems, but I am sure there must be an equivalent to ASME Piping Codes.

There is indeed portable RT equipment for butt welds, and it is routinely performed in-situ (the field). The % of butt welds to inspect really falls under the relevant code or standard you are using. It is entirely possible that you may not need to perform RT for your specific piping system butt welds.

Thanks, in answer to your questions;

1) OD = 50mm nominal mild steel
2) It is a complete new installation.
3) working line pressure is between 2.5-3.0 bar.

The area that the pipe line travels through is sensitive, therefore 100% testing of all the butt welds in the line.

I will try the ASME B31.3 Piping Code as you recommended as a starting point, thanks again.
