Thanks for posting this new reference. I particularly like papers with reference to the real world, or "case studies" etc., and I have given you another "star". Some folks might be surprised by the 15 bar surge in as well as concomitant effects from a relatively short "6 bar" rated 350mm/~14" diameter underground polyethylene pipeline, that connects to some aboveground steel for continuation, with all of same flowing at less than 2m/sec flow velocity (I suspect a not entirely uncommon piping arrangement). The typical estimate for max surge pressure, based on slowing the velocity to zero, is only valid for horizontal pipelines with no column separation and no interaction with pumps. Well systems are the "perfect storm" in that regard.
