We have designed a storage tank to serve as fire protection storage for a school. Since it is for fire protection only there will be very little turnover in the tank. The tank will be filled with well water.

Should we be concerned with the water becoming stagnant, algae? Suggestions?

Thanks

I was involved in a deal like you are describing a log time ago. A school owned tank was used by the municipality, and filled with municipal water. A disagreement between the two resulted in a parting of the ways. The school then filled the tank with chlorinated well water, and as it is in Pennsylvania, installed a steam coil to prevent freezing. There were lots of problems with low Cl2 and bacteria. Had to close the kitchen for weeks at a time, no water fountains, quite a mess.

Either install a hydromantic or constant pressure system and use the tank for fire, or find some more customers

As this is only a fire water storage - cannot see that stagnation will be a great problem. If you are concerned fit a small recirculation pump and or aeration unit to it to turn the tank over every now and then.
