Water Soluable Coating

I am looking for a coating that can be applied to a cardboard cylinder that will ultimatly be submerged in water. The coating needs to extend the time needed for the water to soak through the cardboard but not make the cardboard waterproof.

It needs to be non-toxic as well.

Try soybean oil, AKA a lecithin or an ester, or a water emulsion silicone. These would slow down the water permeation, but eventually wash out and allow water through.

Polyvinyl alcohol would give a reinforcing effect while dry and a controlled solubility on entering water. ISP ltd should be able to help, they do loads of varyingly soluble polymers like polyvinylpyrollidone that would allow you to fine tune the solubility. They're also very safe biologically which is pretty important if I'm guessing correctly!

It comes in various formulas. It is basically a no stick coating that is hydrophobic, but gas permable.
