Hi Guys!

Do you have experience with variable speed drives for two stage double acting reciprocating air compressors? Is it worth going for or not? Will there be any problem with lubrication (oil pump is directly mounted on crankshaft) and dynamic balancing?

Thanks in advance.

Why not ask Ingersoll Rand what the limitations are of operating a compressor designed for fixed speed operation in a variable speed mode ?

It would seem that they are BEST qualified to advise on this.

Certainly, the motor must be rated for inverter duty and for constant torque operation over the speed range that you intend to operate it. Motor cooling (thermal dissipation) as speed is reduced must be considered.

The VFD must be of a robust design that will tolerate the peak current (from peak torque) demand that the mechanical load will impart to it, without tripping. A VFD utilizing Sensorless Vector technology would be a primary consideration.
