There is an environment variable UGII_MOVIE_CODEC which you can set to change the codec used.
In my testing I found I had to install the K-Lite Codec Pack (32 & 64bit).
Then set the UGII_MOVIE_CODEC value to FFDS, XVID, X264 or LAGS.
Can't remember if there was any trick with the install of the codec pack.
However I record a lot of videos for NX and I always use either Snagit or Camtasia.
Never bother with the internal recorder.
Snagit is great for quick videos that don't need editing or annotations but it will only do MP4.
Camtasia is for edited or narrated ones, we always output in MP4but there are other formats it can produce.
One thing I have to say for Microsoft Video 1 format is the compressibility with RAR is amazing.

From my experience, at least with respect to Camtasia from TechSmith, when we installed Camtasia on my laptop, NX automatically became aware of the TechmSmith codec and started to include it as an option when using the NX 'Movie' function.
And while it is true that since I have the full suite of TechSmith tools installed on my laptop that I generally use Camtasia instead of the built-in NX Movie function, as when we record my 'NX Quick Tip' videos which you can find at the Siemens PLM Community site:
and which can also be found at our 'library' on YouTube:
That being said, there is one place where it might be best to use the internal NX Movie capture and that is when playing back an Assembly Sequence. That is because in that situation, using an external video capture tool may not properly sync with what is basically a frame-by-frame playback of the sequence. If you use the built-in 'Export to Movie' function from within the Assembly Sequence task, you are assured that NO 'frames' of the sequence will be missed nor will there be any partially captured frames due to synchronization issues.
