Hi. I am busy doing some research on the implementation of Impact Dampers in Engineering Structures. Do you know of any critical outstanding issues related to the topic? There are a number of practical issues to do with selection of materials and long term performance and wear, especially of the damper material, including temperature effects.

Most of the literature out there is theoretical and not much has been published on pratical applications of Impact Dampers in Structures.

Has anyone encountered anything specific that still needs to be investigated?

Cheers

There is a big difference between harmonic absorbers and bumpers (to take the extremes).

Which are you interested in?

I am interested in Impact Dampers (Bumpers)

you got me puzzled too. I think you mean things like rubber foundation elements, steel springs (which are actually no dampers but isolaters) or something else?

To absorb the impact for a single event (bumper)? In this, the bumper is assumed to be damaged, possibly irreparably so, after the impact event.

Or to absorb multiple, repetetive, cyclical impacts or harmonic vibrations (absorber)? The device is assumed to survive impacts/vibrations of some specified max. load, frequency, duration.
