VHS to MiniDV Problems

Can anyone explain the reason for the following :

In using the following setup :

Cheap VHS Source >> Cheap VHS VTR >> Video Monitor

I get a stable picture - no time code issues. no flagging etc.

and in using this setup

Cheap VHS Source - miniDV VTR (Sony DSR11) >> Video Monitor

I get alot of flagging, looks like alot of TBC required.


It doesn't made sense that the first setup, using a cheap VHS VTR I have a clear picture and with the second setup using a high end MINIDV VTR the picture is worse...

Wouldn't one expect the picture to be the same or better in the second setup? Ie, why, when using and expensive deck, do I now require an additonal device (a TBC) to correct the picture?

For what its worth - both setup use composite connections.
