I am designing a pressure vessel for hexane recovery and I want to calculate the thickness of the external jacket. The vessel is 0,6 barg and Hot water inside jacket is 100ºC and 8 bar.

Thickness = P*D/(2*K) + CA ???

Internal diameter of the vessel is 1,6m and K for CS at 140ºC (Design Temperature is 140ºC) is 184 MPa
Distance from the vessel to the jacket is 1 inch.

I am considering 1,5mm for corrosion allowance.

My question is : Is this equation applicable?
Diameter = 1,6 + 2*0.0254 ????

Thank you.

Andre,

The calculation of half-pipe wall thickness for a jacketed vessel is a bit more complicated.....

Because the vessel wall must also be evaluated as well as the half pipe, ASME Section VIII has written an appendix demonstrating the calculation method. This Appendix was based on an ASME paper developed by a Mr Jawaad of the NOOTER Corporation.

The book: "2001 Guidebook for the Design of ASME Section VIII Pressure Vessels, Second Edition" (by: James R. Farr and Maan H. Jawad) is available from the ASME website( it explains this method and is available for about $70

Most of the time, the qualification of the half-pipe is left to the vessel fabricator....most of the half-pipes I have encountered are Sched 40 CS or Sched 10S Stainless Steel

Are you adding a jacket to an existing vessel ?

Are you working for a vessel fabricator or is this kind of a unique project ?

I'm involved in a project for Hexane Washing Unit in a HPDE plant. The project is still in detail Engineering and there was the idea, on a meeting, to decrease the Hot Water design pressure in order to decrease the thickness of the jacket. That calculation is being done by me.
