Many Vertical Motors are oil lubricated. A "Stand Pipe" obstructs common measuring tools the necessary access to check dimensions of the oil lubricated bearing housings/end brackets during the repair process. The "pipe" is usually removed, sometimes at a lengthy time element to obtain the housing measurement.
If the pipe is destroyed during the removal process, this adds additional repair aspects.
What tool(s) are available to make this obstructed measurement?
What other methods for measuring this particular situation are in current practice, other than removing the "pipe"?

The best tool for a job like that is a really old machinist.
