VB.net help

I've written a macro for filling in the drawing title block and everything works ok but I have one problem with it.
It reads cetain custom properties from the draft file but I really need to check that the property actually exists, otherwise it throws an error message.
I'm no expert at VB and not sure how to do this.
Can anyone help?
Using VB.net 2008
