Variable speed drive cable

Does variable speed drive cable have to be used on the load side of a vfd? If so why? and What application would using it fall under? Installing it on an agricultural facility. Planning on the speed drive cable to be underslab in conduit. Any suggestions. I have seen THHN used and would like to use it because of the cost of the speed drive cable.
