May I know how do we decide when to use Ball valves, butterfly valves, globe valves, gate valves. Etc? I am very confused about the difference between those and under what design applications what should be used. Any rule of thumbs or suggestions?

Hello a................

Gate Valve:
Normally used for on-off service
not good for control
disk and seat will erode at part open position
usually straight through full flow capability
smaller pressure drop

Plug Valve:
Good for on-off service
mild throttling service
can be had in multi-port configuration

Ball Valve:
Flow is straight through
Can be had in multi-port configuration
fast acting, 1/4 turn open to close
with engineered "ball" ie: V-Port cane be used for control

Globe Valve:
Usually used for throttling
high pressure drop

Butterfly Valve:
on-off or throttling service
good for large flows of gases or liquids
good for slurries or liquids with a lot of suspended matter
minimal sediment buildup inside valve
can be easily lined for chemical service

A quick list off the top, there are probably more for each valve.
