Can anyone guide me as to the differences between the various types of valves to be used in the water industry? I am confused as to the differneces between a stop valve, sluice valve, gate valve, butterfly valve and to their relative performances.

Cheers

Water application is a typical application and does not include much complex selection. Before asking about the right valve for your application you may need to prepare (advise) your needs:
What is your line size (pipe size and schedule). Connection type (flange, socket, screwed)
Process data: Flow rate, DP, Inlet pressure, temperature, water contamination if any. What type of water (sea, clean, treated water, cooling,….?) solid partials?
Valve function. On/OFF, modulating, manual? Flow control, pressure control, isolation
What type of power is available: pneumatic Electric.
What is you budget, for buy and maintenance.

Even more than one type of valves can suit the application, some of the types will be eliminated by knowing your application.
