Our specification for small valves state that cold die stenciling shall not be used. Low stress interrupt dot stamps may be used.

Can someone explain what both of the sentences above mean? This specification was written a long time ago.

I think they are referring to steel marking stamps, especially those with sharp-cornered edges. See page 1932 of the current McMaster Carr catalog (

for examples.

Dot pattern marking stamps produce lower residual stresses in the parts getting stamped. Examples on page 1933 of the catalog, and reference there to "meet Nuclear American Society of Mechanical Engineers Code Section 3, Div. 1, Paragraph NA-3766.6 (2)."

To avoid this, many valve manufacturers will pop rivet or tie their metal tagging onto the valves. Their information is dot stamped onto the metal tags.

Metal tags means you won't have to do any "cold die stenciling".
