General advice:
Start with the simplest possible command. Whatever is the simplest possible thing to implement, implement only that first. I call the approach, 'Just make the LED blink'. People think it will only take 5 minutes. Three weeks later... After that it really does get easier.
Also, double check application notes, simple reference designs and code snippets.
