using a long holokrome setscrew like a stud

I'm thinking of using four M16 X 100 mm setscrews like studs to bolt a component to a big cast frame in place of the wimpy DIN 6912 drilled head low head caps screws used previously. We'll be using class 10 nuts, and torquing them up like a 10.9 bolt. I'm opting for "studs" because we won't have good control over the grip length in all cases, and I fear that will make using bolts kind of risky in regards to bottoming or thread engagement.

According to the relevant ASTM specs ( F912 and A574 ) the chemistries are similar. The setscrews are going to be a bit harder (45-53 RCH) , compared to the SHCS at 38-43 RCH. The ASTM specs talk about elongation of the SHCS material ( minimum 10%) , but only seem concerned about damaging the teeny internal hex of the set screw.

I'm expecting a call back from HoloKrome tomorrow on this matter.

In the mean time, does anyone see any problems?

Not a good idea. The increased hardness for the set screw is going to result in low ductility and toughness. Set screws are designed for use in compression and not in tension.

Agree with the poster above me- I wouldn't use a set screw.

You're not talking an odd size or length.. just buy studs.
