Is there a standard in the US that specifically covers alternators for automotive applications? I have had a brief look through the NEMA MG1 standard but I can't see any mention of automotive machines. I am actually interested in a high voltage auto alternator but any info would be useful.

Thanks

UKpete,

This specification may be of interest as well:

Standard No.: IEEE 11
Title: STANDARD FOR ROTATING ELECTRIC MACHINERY FOR RAIL AND ROAD VEHICLES

Summary:
Covers rotating electric machinery which is part of propulsion and major auxiliary equipment on internally and externally powered electrically propelled rail, road vehicles and similar large transport and haulage vehicles (and trailers when specified in the contract). Major auxiliary equipment includes blower and compressor motors, motor-generator and motor-alternator sets, auxiliary generators and exciters, usually larger than 3 kW.

TVP, MLoew thanks for your help. I have ordered loan copies of the SAE and IEEE standards mentioned so I can judge which is most relevant.
