hello

two story house with roof deck, i have upper roof wall(pop out) for stair enclosure that is 4'-6" x 24'-0".
north side wall of stair enclosure has 3'-0" door, so i can't put shearwall(see attach pdf file).
i got plancheck for it. planchecker wants to see seismic calc for north side wall of stair enclosure.

how can i prove it?
i live in California

Hmmm... it seems who checks feels unsure about the structural strength for the east-west direction. Yet I find strange he commits himself to ask for something that may not be feasible; I mean, I think it would be reasonable to say "I am not confident on the proper strength under normative earthquake action for an east west direction, since I have not seen the checks" but to focus on a single element seems to me out of place.

So I first would lead him to this view, and then prove by the if standing, standing calculations, he is wrong. If you do not have such calculations at hand some will need to be made, with proper checks on connections. And might be, depending upon your structure and framing, inspector is right and you may need some change for proper proof of compliance with the code.

Best wishees.

If the high end of the West roof is close to the top plate of the stairwell, can you strap the stairwell top plate to the roof diaphram? Can you post an elevation view of the north side of the building? That might make it easier to help.
