Hello,

Currently my company uses a coditherm to brand unique bar codes on some of our products. We are looking into other branding technologies to brand unique bar codes. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Laser marking?
Permanent, fast, some capital expenditure. Can be neat too, with the correct base polymer/pigment combination.

I have done a bit of research on laser marking but I wasn't sure if it was possible on the plastic directly and still be able to be read. Do you know of a direction for me to go to continue researching?

Laser marking is used at times on keyboards. They are often PBT which laser marks nicely with the correct pigment and stabiliser package. Manufacturers of PBT will be best placed to advise. Some colourant manufacturers will also have advice.

I know 20 years ago, Bayer did quite a bit of work on it. Probably Ticona and Sabic and maybe DuPont and DSM also have data and advice.

You need to talk to a laser pig supplier. Many variables to take into account. e.g. base polymer/light on dark/dark on light etc.

The nice thing is with laser marking is that it is very permanent.

We use a pigment made by Merck for white on black nylon.

Laser marking is my suggestion, too. A galvo unit is what you'll want to look for, and the type of plastics you'll mark will effect the wavelength you'll use (generally separated into CO2 and fiber/YAG). Some plastics may not directly mark with any contrast, but marking compounds are available.

Thank you all for the input! If it helps at all the plastic we use is high density polyethylene.

Directorone: Should be no problem. You need to talk to laser suppliers and colourant suppliers to get what you want. It's easy! Let these people do the work (It's what they are paid for!)

If you go with a UV-wavelength system (in the 350nm range), you'll get a nice dark mark on HDPE. If you end up with a more generic CO2 or fiber/YAG laser, you can use Cermark/Thermark for a marking compound.

Here in our area, milk is packaged in one gallon jugs. (LDPE) There are unique date and batch codes, and I'm assuming these might be some sort of inkjet printing?

Just a thought.

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.
