Understanding Abaqus memory usage

Hello all,

I am using Abaqus 6.10 and have 3GB on my machine, I have 32bit Windows XP. Reading through the manuals, I just wanted to make sure I understood this correctly.. Is 2GB's the maximum memory I can allocate to an analysis for a machine with up to 8GB (this is what the manual says but it seems odd)? Also, from my understanding I can add another 1GB of RAM for my 32bit windows XP. If I can run an analysis with more than 2GB's would it be worth upgrading from 3GB to 4GB on my machine?

Are you booting up your 32-bit XP system with the "/3GB" option? If not, then XP can only allocate 2GB to any one process. With it, it can allocate up to 3GB to any one process.

Now, there's always the issue of how much memory the OS uses. Does your system have a lot of TSR (terminate stay resident) programs? What's the memory usage of your computer immediately after boot-up?
