Hello,

Could somebody direct me to a source that illustrates the design of underground water tanks for storm water detention for a small subdivision.

Thanks in advanced

There are two general type of storm water detention tanks, either on-line or off-line.

On-line tanks are basically a widening of the sewer system so that it provides storage capacity. I have work on jobs where this has been done three ways. The first is just to up size the pipe diameter, the second is to replace a length of sewer with box culvert sections (with a channel formed in the base) and the third system I worked with was a tunnel bored through a hill.

Off-line tanks are basically just large boxes offset from the line. There will be a manhole/weir arrangement upstream to control pass forward flows and spill flows.

In my neck of the woods on-line tanks are preferred as they are better at self cleaning than off-line tanks. The restriction is that there is often not enough room available to fit them in.

CMP can be used for tanks. The Handbook of Steel Drainage & Highway Construction Products has a lot of photos and detailed info to design connections, etc, and a company like Contech will help to design. The City/County/DOT where you are may have standard drawings for detention systems - in these parts there are many restrictions and criteria on allowable configurations and dimensions that must be met to be permitted.
