Hi fellows
I have a question about these two photos
what exactly these appendages are in the pump suction inlet?
are they for defusing water flow and helping with the laminar flow or to bear the rotation shaft?

The best answer will be from the mfg and or installation manual. Did you try those options?

Never seen anything like that before.

Looks like it's there to prevent swirl.
