I am trying to design a simple structure with one vertical pole about 15' high and attached @ a 45degree another 4' member, weighing 600#. What forumlas should I use to calculate: the type of concrete and the dimensions of the support pad? Any help be great!

Well, first you need to choose type of foundation. You mentioned pad footing, but you may also consider pier foundation, considering the pole structure. After that determine your vertical load, lateral load and moment. Then determine soil bearing capacity. Now just open a reinforced concrete text and design the pier or square footing structurally given the bearing capacity and structural loadings. Finally determine if the settlement is acceptable for the structure.

SumMoments = 0
SumVertical Forces=0
SumHorizontal Forces = 0

As simple as csd72 indicated. Good luck. Watch out for OT and twisting due to lateral load effect.

What is the proposed use of this pole? Describe the project in more detail.

This structure will be used to some support a RFID Scanning system which will scan trailers of Well Testing Equipment as it leaves our yard. I have included the proposed design.

Looks like drilled pier would be a better choice than concrete pad.

Kirkwood00007,

The design of this would take into account the following:

1. Local wind and seismic forces.
2. Soil conditions
3. Frost considerations
4. Area and configuration of the scanning panels (for wind)
5. Other supplemental or possible loads in the future.

With the above, you'd have to do a wind/seismic analysis of the pole and size the footing/pier that supports it for the applied loads.

Also of concern is the connection of the pole to the base. A type of moment connection is required here.

Thanks to all I have completed the design.

What footing system is the final version? Sizes? Just curious.

I went with a pier foundation with 12" radius and 4' depth, because of the water level being so low in New Iberia.

Good to know. Thanks, and good luck. Seems little too shallow for this conservative mind

Good to know. Thanks, and good luck. Seems little too shallow for this conservative mind. But if you have done all cal with proper soil parameters, it should be good. Go back there at each season change (3-4 trips/year) to verify the assumption holds. That's what I would do.

Hear you, all I can do is make the reccomendation. Sometimes operations rules, in this case they did. My calculations had the depth set almost 1.5' deeper.

If "operations" is making the call what do they need you for?
