Tying new footer into existing

Is it better to tie a new footer for a building addition to the existing footer or let the addition settle independently of the existing building?

SlideRuleEra is correct in his/her previous comments, however my experience with residential slabs, because they are generally covered with carpet, differential settlement will show up more readily (and be more difficult to fix) than any local damage due to load transfer between new & old. If you do join the slabs, be sure to spread the loads - use closely spaced dowels, use building paper separator to allow contraction. Preparation of subgrade, particularly at interface, is key.
