Turning off background images

I have a couple parts and assemblys with background images, but the Insert/Picture function is greyed out. I'm not sure if there is an easy way of removing the image? Is it possible the parts where encoded to prevent removing of the image?

You can't remove the image, but you can hide it.

View\Display\Picture - Uncheck it
