I need a way to turn a 3D model of a tray made from papaerboard into a flat blank as shown in the image.
So I have this 3D model of a tray. The tray is made pressing a paperboard. I need a way to determine what size and shape flat to get the desired end result. The corners of the flat are creased as seen in the image. The thing I need to know is that does a program exsist that calcuates what side flat I need from the 3D model I have. Also it would nice of the program would calculate the creasing needed.

Hello,

You might want to post this in one of the CAD sections of Engineering Tips. I run Solid Edge and it now has the ability to create flats for stamped parts. Higher end programs like NX and Catia are used a lot in the automotive industry for stamped sheet metal parts and this work flow may be adaptable to pressing paper if you can input the properties of the paper. If you are not the manufacturer or toolmaker, you might want to contact someone in the industry to see how they allow for creases etc.

this is called (predictably enough) flat pattern development ... used in sheet metal components
