Lots of fragments of the babbitt, some popped out. The fracture surface of the babbit looks like a fatigue surface and there is not a lot of smearing. Metengr made mention in an old posting of babbitt fatigue (see thread605-155979 ) and this sound like what he describes. Can anyone provide information/list reference books that would help me find my way?

Thanks.

If you have access to EPRI documents, here is the one you need;

EPRI "Manual of Bearing Failures and Repair in Power Plant Rotating Equipment" GS-7352 July 1991

excellent. I keep forgetting that EPRI is far more than just boiler tubes. I do have access and I was able to download the file. There is peace and tranquility in the metals lab today (or at least, at the moment).

EPRI will appreciate your saying that.
