First off, I just want to say that I do not necessarily endorse the Tsai-Wu criterion, but I would like to properly state its use.

If one wants to do a progressive damage analysis, you need to separate fiber dominated failure modes from matrix dominated failure modes. The Tsai-Wu criterion has no clear delineation between modes.

So far, I have seen three separate solutions to distinguish modes: 1. via a ply based equation, 2. via micromechanics, 3. via strength ratio of the terms in the criterion itself (presumably).

Is it then fair to say there is no standard way to separate the modes?
