fellas, this is going to sound lame, but is the correct term spark kernel or flame kernel.
i thought SAE refered to it as flame, but someone has told me otherwise.

Makes sense as I would guess it may be pretty hard to characterize a spark kernal . . .
 
Flame kernel is the right term. A good ignition book "The Doctor's Step-by step Guide to Optimizing Your Ignition" by Christopher A. Jacobs, Ph.D., E.E.
